Medication Aide (142 hours/$597)

 The Medication Aide program is a state regulated training and certification program that prepares Certified Nurse Aides to administer medications in a long-term care setting. Students receive instruction and training in the preparation and administration of medications; observe, report, and document resident’s status; review principles of safety; and demonstrate knowledge of measurement systems, body systems, and common diseases. Upon completion, students will prepare for the state examination through the Texas Health and Human Services to become a Certified Medication Aide. The program consists of 130 hours of classroom instruction with 12 hours of clinical application in a long-term care center environment. Registration Requirements

1. CPR for healthcare providers

2. Registration Form

3. General Requirements--Must be 18 years old, High School Transcript or GED and CNA license with minimum 6 months employment in a state approved facility

4. Identification--Valid Government Issued ID or Driver License and Social Security Card

5. Vaccines Required: 

Required Immunizations based on Texas Administrative Code (§ 97.64 § 97.65) &  CDC, and clinical facility contractual requirements. All Healthcare students must complete the following requirements prior to being allowed to have patient contact.

  • Tetanus-Diphtheria Vaccine.
    1. Students must show receipt of one dose of tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis vaccine (Tdap). In addition, one dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine must have been received within the last seven years. Td vaccine is an acceptable substitute, if Tdap vaccine is medically contraindicated.
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Vaccines.
    1. Students born on or after January 1, 1957, must show, prior to patient contact, acceptable evidence of vaccination of two doses of a measles-containing vaccine administered since January 1, 1968 (preferably MMR vaccine).
    2. Students born on or after January 1, 1957, must show, prior to patient contact, acceptable evidence of vaccination of two doses of a mumps vaccine.
    3. Students must show, prior to patient contact, acceptable evidence of one dose of rubella vaccine.
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine.
    1. Students are required to receive a complete series of hepatitis B vaccine prior to the start of direct patient care.
  • Varicella Vaccine.
    1. Students are required to have received two doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine.
  • Influenza Vaccine
    1. Seasonal
  • TB Skin Test
    1. TB 2-step

*Titers: Antibody titer is a laboratory test that measures the level of antibodies in a blood sample. In some situations, your health care provider may check your antibody titer to see if you had an infection in the past (for example, chickenpox) or to decide which immunizations you need. To obtain information please see your family doctor.

  1. Provide proof of personal health insurance information for the duration of the class and clinical or sign a medical release form
  2. At time of registration, we will conduct a Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (TDADS) Background Check

State Exam Requirements

  1. Before the 30th day of enrollment, student must complete the State Exam Registration:
    1. Student will be responsible for the State Exam Fee of $25
    2. Student will be responsible for completing the State Exam Application
      1. Application MUST include:
      2. Notarized Official Copy of High School Diploma or GED Certificate
      3. Employment Verification form which student will receive on the first day of class
      4. State Fee of $25
  2. Student will complete the State Exam upon successful completion of the Certified Medication Aide Program. 

Certified Medication Aide Update (7 hours/$69)

Upon completion of the Certified Medication Aide program, each permit holder is responsible for renewing their permit before the expiration date.  A permit holder must complete a seven clock-hour continuing education program approved by DADS prior to expiration of the permit in order to renew the permit. Must provide a copy of Certified Medication Aide permit renewal form.
